This is a very nice Model 1816 Flintlock Pistol made by Simeon North of Middletown, Connecticut ca. 1817 - 1820. It is a .54 Caliber smoothbore and was produced as a U.S. Military issue firearm. The lock is marked S. North over an Eagle motif with U and S at either side and MIDLn CON. at the bottom. The "S" is hard to read due to minor pitting. The barrel is marked on the left side of the breech end with a "P" and U. S.. The overall length of the pistol is approximately 15-3/4" and the barrel length measures 9". The barrel is a dark gray in color with some light roughness overall. There is an 1/8" gap at the back of the barrel between the rear face of the barrel and the vertical surface of the inletting for the barrel. The barrel is attached to the stock by a double loop barrel band which is retained by a spring. A brass front sight is located on the forward loop of the barrel band. A tapered wood ramrod (which is probably a replacement) is housed beneath the barrel. The gun's stock is made of walnut and is dark in color. The stock shows wear from use. Corners and edges are rounded. A 3" piece of wood has been replaced on the right side between the lock mechanism and the breechplug tang (see pic. #4). The repair is well done. The stock has a hairline crack on the underneath side between the triggerguard and lock. The stock has various minor nicks and scratches from age and use. The stock is mounted with steel furniture including the triggerguard, buttcap, and sideplate. Scattered roughness is present on all steel parts. The gun's lock mechanism is original flint and is dark brown in color with some light roughness. The lock mechanism is still tight and fully functional. Overall condition of this gun considering its age is between good and very good. Included with the pistol is a .54 caliber lead ball mold marked with the letter "N". The mold is dark brown in color and has scattered minor roughness. The mold cavity is in very good condition. It is very rare to find a ball/bullet mold with this pistol. This is a great old gun from early America!
